Tips & Tricks

As an employee, your first priority is to perform your task. Of course together with your colleagues and in the context of the goals of the organisation, but still: your own task came first. As a leader, you are responsible for the tasks of others, those of your employees. You have an overview of the activities of the entire department, but you do not perform the tasks. Tip:  Take a good look at whether the tasks you perform do not belong on the plate of one of your employees: delegate!

Many starting entrepreneurs set the bar too high and think of themselves that they have to perform from day 1. They focus far too much on achieving goals rather than on learning and developing new skills. And that’s a shame! It’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them. Becoming a good leader takes time and you can absolutely take that time! Tip:  Agree with yourself which competencies you will develop and how you want to realize this development.

Managers and directors often have their own rules and standards and also meet regularly in their own meetings. Managers often use a secretary and have other ‘status symbols’. Even if you find this completely unnecessary and no longer of this time, see it as a kind of game that you have to play to a certain extent to be accepted. Tip:  Get to know the rules of the game and make use of the facilities that are available. Don’t change them on day 1 (but maybe later).

Many managers tend to fill all the holes their employee’s drop. After all, they feel enormously responsible for the result of the entire department. This is a huge pitfall for two reasons. First of all, you get mega busy and it will never be good enough. And secondly, your employees will sit back and relax knowing that you will solve it for them if things don’t go well. They are certainly not going to take responsibility themselves. Tip:  Occasionally let something go wrong so that your employees take action themselves.
